Q: I am finding it really difficult to stay up-beat as a vegan when I see so much needless animal suffering going on in the world and so few people caring anything about it. How can you be awake to what is going on and stay positive about life? - Sensitive

Dear Sensitive,

When you open up that Pandora's box and become awake to all the suffering that we humans inflict on the animals and the world around us, it can be hard not to spiral into a funk of negativity. The problems seem so huge and unbearably terrible. But being negative is not going to help anyone, least of all the animals we wish to save.

So here are a few ways to help you stay positive.

Firstly I would advise not to overload too much on watching footage of animal suffering and reading about atrocities. These things do a really effective job at creating awareness and are of course important, but once you are on board with the vegan movement, there is no need to make yourself watch even more. It is like continually cutting an open wound - you don't need to suffer yourself to help the animals. You already know how bad things are, don't wallow in it.

Secondly channel all that energy you have into making positive change instead of being negative, depressed or angry. Your energy will be so much more powerful and effective if you focus it on making changes for good instead of railing against what is wrong.

You don't have to be angry to care. You don't have to be angry to take action. You can come from a place of love rather than hate which is a much better way to change the world. Negativity only begets negativity and what we need more of in this world is a positive movement for change.

And lastly know that you are doing what is right. You are living with compassion and awareness and the best thing you can do is be a beacon for the people around you. And you are certainly not alone. The vegan movement is growing all over the world, by leaps and bounds. No, it is not fast enough for those of us who are already here, but things are moving in the right direction. Change is happening and we are the change makers. So keep marching forwards.
