Q: I've been vegan for 3 years now and I love it so much! For the last year I've been really interested in becoming a more active vegan. I would love to be part of some activism but I live in a small country town. I'm only a few hours from Canberra and often go to Wollongong. These are the cities that I have most to do with and would love some advice or resources on getting involved in some activism. I have visited sites like Cube of Truth outreach and emailed some other organisations but have found it difficult to get any proper information on actually volunteering and how to go about that. - New Activist

Dear New Activist,

Congrats on your 3 years vegan, and it is fantastic that you want to get more active in the vegan community. There are so many ways that you can do it. As you mentioned there are organisations like Outreach and Anonymous for the Voiceless. Other organisations include Animals Australia and Aussie Farms. Reach out to them, they are always happy for support.

If you don't want to be part of a formal group there are always events going on around the country that you can look to support or volunteer for as well. Vegan Australia publishes lists of events on their website, so this is a good place to start. You can also sign up for weekly email of events in your area. Maybe get in touch with event organisers and see how you might participate.

Educating people about veganism is also a great way to be active. You could do this by offering to speak to local groups and organisations in your own community, maybe organise your own little local event.

But I think one of the best ways to be active is to be a shining example of veganism. When you live your values people notice. When you look happy and healthy and act with compassion and care, people notice. They will wonder what makes you shine and when they ask you - you can tell them. "I am vegan. I live my life conscious of the choices I am make. I strive to do no harm". This is the way we should all be living our lives, don't you think?
