Vegan nutrition

To be healthy we must all make sure we are consuming the right balance of nutrients. Your diet should be rich in whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, nuts and seeds, eating as much variety as possible.

Getting adequate nutrients to sustain our body is something we should all be aware of. While on average vegans live longer than others, we still have to make an effort to eat healthily. If you eat a wide variety of whole foods, you will cover nearly all nutrients your body requires.

Many people worry about getting enough protein on a vegan diet but in fact it is easy for a vegan diet to meet recommendations for protein, as long as calorie intake is adequate. Vegans can get all the protein they need from vegetables, lentils, tofu, beans, nuts and seeds and many other plant foods. It is important to eat a varied diet throughout the day. See more in the article Where do you get your protein? below.

Important: One nutrient that must be consumed via supplements or fortified foods is Vitamin B12. See the article What every vegan should know about B12 below.
