Comment: I am concerned about the impact of climate change on both humans and animals. Animals will succumb to extreme climatic events well before we do. A world that becomes 2-4 degrees warmer, or more, will kill billions of individual animals, and could eliminate a substantial proportion of existing animal species. It is an AJP priority that urgent action be taken to address global climate destabilisation. Animal agriculture plays a major role as a cause of climate change, so a switch to a plant based diet would be a significant help in avoiding it. Globally, it is essential that we protect ocean life and marine eco-systems and decrease livestock numbers to both reduce methane and other greenhouse gas emissions and allow reforestation.

Comment: We want to broaden the focus in health policy from just treating disease to also improving health. We believe the biggest gains in health, longevity and economy are to be gained by improving people's knowledge and access to healthy diet and exercise opportunities. Our key dietary goal is to shift Australia's food focus towards healthy plant-based wholefoods. This will greatly reduce the rates of many illnesses.

Comment: I am strongly in favour of spending on preventative health campaigns. If we can get Australian's eating better, thereby reducing their risk of a range of chronic diseases, we will be spending less on hospital care in the long term. Often money is spent encouraging people to be tested for various diseases, which is good; but little funding is put into advising people how to reduce their risk of getting that disease in the first place by changing what they eat.

Comment: The Animal Justice Party has a long term vision for a kinder Australia but recognises that change will proceed in stages. Many of our policies recognise this and don't simply describe our vision of the future, but the steps required to get there. These steps may be seen as more incrementalist than many would desire, but the alternative is not overnight abolition, but no change. Welfare improvements are not our end goal, but a paving stone on the road to the end of commodification and exploitation of non-human animals.

Comment: I would like to see a health and environment tax on all animal products, much like cigarettes and alcohol, that reflects the true cost of manufacture and consumption. Conversely, I would like to see subsidies going to ethical, viable, environmentally friendly (or friendlier at least) plant-based agriculture and products not reliant upon the commodification of animals and obscene land and water use. As an example, if the choice is a plant based burger or an animal product-based burger, the latter should cost at least double that of the former.

Comment: The AJP advocates a plant based diet free of all products derived from animals. The current demand for animal products in Australia needs to shift to lessen the impacts on individual animals, human health and the planet; education and promotional action needs to occur to bring about a higher uptake of a plant based diet. Education can help people understand the true cost of an animal based diet and strive for individual change.

Failure by successive Governments to put sensible legislation in place to give proper protection to animals against suffering demonstrates the critical need for parliamentary representation, which is why I am standing in the Senate for AJP this Federal election.

Comment: The question should be raised - why is agriculture given special treatment, subsidies, bailouts ? It contributes to its own failing re erratic climate events and then puts hand out for assistance. Other businesses meet hard times, changing markets and must adapt of their own accord. We should not be continually propping up unsustainable businesses but rather assist in transitioning farmers to change to a business plan that will work into the future.

Comment: Your questions were very leading, which is a pity. In any case my beliefs are biblically based. We are to husband and use animals, and humans are the masters of all animals, but at the same time we have a responsibility to care for them and to treat them humanely wherever possible. Cruelty is always unacceptable.

Comment: Your questions are very leading, which is a pity. This made it difficult to answer most of the questions and still give my true opinion. One example is where you discuss land clearing for animal based agriculture. Whilst this may not be a good thing the amount of land clearing required if we went to an all plant based agricultural system would be far, far greater.

Comment: Once again, very leading questions. You are also confusing issues, such as animal based products and processed meats. Whilst the latter has demonstrable health concerns those same concerns do not apply to all animal based products. Also, the opportunity to get protein and other nutrients is so much higher with animal based products that it is unreasonable to promote a vegan lifestyle in, for example, hospitals where patients may have a compromised digestive system.

Comment: Vegans make up a very small percentage of the population. So it is unreasonable to expect governments to act in such a pro vegan manner. This made, for example, Q30 particularly difficult to answer. That said, some support of a Vegan lifestyle is reasonable, just as the protection of animals from cruelty is reasonable. Ultimately, the concerns of Vegans are something that the free market should decide. If there is enough of a demand for Vegan food and clothing then the market will provide it.

So I am ok with the use of terms in relation to vegan products

Comment: If the government "should act" on an issue then I would like to see more detailed information on how this should happen. Apart from that, I support transparency at all levels of government and expanded access to information about food including source, health content, and animal welfare. I am also working to ban corporate and union donations to political parties as we believe that the flow of money into the political system and the conflicts of interest and corruption it creates prevents organisations like yours from achieving valid policy outcomes through the political process. Our strategic intention is to achieve results in relation to campaign funding (and the other matters in the Democratic Reform Alliance Platform) that would allow Vegan Australia to achieve its aims. Please see further detail at: https://www.democraticreformalliance.org.au/ Good luck with your work.

At our current population, we all need to use and consume less of everything. We also need to have fewer children, and later in life, to slow population growth, since there is limited space on Earth to fit so much life, human or otherwise.

Comment: I run a wellness clinic in Hunter st Newcastle. In the last 4 years we have assisted over 7000 clients to move towards a plant based diet and start consuming hemp seeds and cannabis as food. Cannabis is food, as far as we are concerned and all Australians deserve immediate affordable access. Cannabis and hemp seeds are a dietary essential and a medical necessity, and every day cannabis is withheld from our people is another day of needlessly suffering for all Australians, in my opinion. I think the best way to move forward is to start making the transition to more hemp for food (30%protein) medicine and plastic.

Comment: Scientific evidence is that plants also feel pain so where can we stop? I agree that humans are the only species who should be labeled "animals". It should be not what is done but how it is done with care and respect. Many Indigenous peoples have practiced this and we should learn from them about caring for life.

Comment: I assume by "made public" you mean - open and accountable and do not mean nationalised into government ownership. Packaging also causes unnecessary environmental damage so Q19 should include packaging. Do not forget to include that concrete is also highly damaging to the environment but it is what forms the base of your housing. Which is the most unsustainable - animal agriculture or human population? Surely the first priority of veganism should be the reduction of population which then enables and facilitates a reduction in agriculture across the board?

You also overlook the difference between carcinogenic - actually causing cancer in 100% of cases - and the heightening of risk of developing cancer. Not all consumers will develop cancer from meat but some will develop cancer from consuming certain plants. Both cases must be treated fairly and equally without discrimination.

Comment: Freedom of choice should be enjoyed by all without prejudice in any direction. Labeling should be accurate and honest. For example - milk is a defined product of mammalian digestion. How are products like Almond milk, or coconut milk products of digestion simply because they are a white liquid? Even vegan mammals produce milk. Why should the public be deceived by vegan adoption of animal nature? Honey is an animal product yet I have yet to meet a vegan who does not enjoy honey? Balance and fairness to all is the most important.

Comment: I believe that not all animals involved in circuses, sport and entertainment are engaged in risky activities. Given the state of our planet, I feel that over time the animal agriculture sector may reduce in size and be subject to greater regulation but at this point in time, I respect the right of individuals to eat what they want and for farmers to produce goods that meet this demand.

Comment: Regarding my neutral response to labelling, I query whether taxation reforms would be more effective in shifting the price point to more accurately reflect the environmental cost and place downward pressure on the consumption of such items. This should be a gradual transition that doesn't impose sudden and significant costs on farmers and food producers. A labelling regime ultimately would burden all food producers including those currently engaged in sustainable operations - I support consultation and modelling in this area.

Comment: In the case of carcinogenic food - like 'environmental impact' labelling, I'm undecided if the burden of labelling all food is more effective than reforms that shift the price point to more accurately reflect the burden on our health system (much like the excise currently imposed on cigarettes). My disagreement to the banning of advertising is that I view this more as an issue around health education and media literacy, and a parenting issue in the case of children. There would be many products subject to an advertising ban if we applied similar standards to other goods and services with inherent risks. I was a vegetarian for over a decade when younger and still frequently cook and eat vegan/vegetarian meals.

Comment: My neutral responses to two questions in this area represent my preference for a more gradual transition over a number of years rather than any enforced and sudden change. If enforced, this could be a costly and difficult process to implement logistically. I support vegan products being able to labelled milk, cheese, sausage and milk but that the labels identify the product as Vegan Milk, Vegan Cheese etc. It is unfortunate that the recent spate of trespassing, theft and public nuisance activities by a small number of animal activists has diminished the prospect of a more engaged public debate on all of these matters. My responses to all questions largely fall within the agree/neutral/disagree as opposed to the strongly agree/strongly disagree categories as my focus if elected, will be on addressing human suffering. I believe if we can start treating everyone with respect and care, that this could be the catalyst for the better treatment of animals and our planet.

However, I do not believe preventing children from vaulting (a horseback sport) reduces suffering. I don't believe we should stop live export, not because of the lack of cruelty, but because of it. If we walk away from the table we can't influence others, we give up our negotiating power over the countries we export to without getting rid of the demand. We need to become a leader in humane live animal transport so that firstly we can show that it is possible and secondly so that we can incentivize others to follow. I believe that animal agriculture will eventually be phased out as the market will demand it, I don't think it's a change which needs to be driven.

Comment: You should include people if you are including animals as we cause more damage to the environment than animals do

Comment: Intensive animal agriculture should be phased out. While not everyone will become vegan or vegetarian, and others will always eat meat, we can all agree on the horrors of factory farming. A comment on entertainment and sport.. while I strongly agree, there are animals that enjoy competing, and attention from an audience. I used to rescue damaged horses. One was an ex Caulfield Cup winner, and he would practice his stall starts alone in the paddock.. he would hear race day music on the radio and he would prance sideways! some horses love to jump, and will happily load themselves in a float to go places. I think giving the animals the opportunity to choose if they want to participate is more to the point. Many animals die in pharmaceutical research testing too, I would like to see this changed, they even bred beagles that were super docile so they wouldn't struggle too much. There are plenty of natural molecules that work, except pharma corporations cannot patent those, only synthetic variants. A note about phasing out animal agriculture.. In tribal cultures, when an animal was taken, they would honour the animal, feed everyone, and nothing was wasted. Everything was used. It's the sheer wastage of life that appalls me, and the lack of empathy for another's pain.

Comment: As a passionate supporter of these topics, I would also like to see agricultural toxins in the environment more closely monitored, petro chemical runoffs into waterways, petrochemicals in our personal care products that end up going down our drains, affecting everything in the food chain.

Comment: Yes.. the only one am four stars on is the balanced diet at all stages of life.. it is absolutely critical to have an adequate intake of essential amino acids, and trace minerals; we need 74 trace minerals with organic fulvic acid every day just to build healthy cells. The trouble is many plants are nutritionally lacking as they are grown in depleted soils. Organic is one thing, but fertilising with just NPK is leading to the package having more nutritional value than the contents.

Comment: only that access should be unfettered, and conversely, corporations will argue that they are trying to meet demand for the never ending thirst for meat. Personally, i found education to be key, as once you see something, you cannot go back to not seeing it. A steady campaign of education, coupled with really good alternatives will see mainstream acceptance of an incredibly emotionally charged topic. Meat and dairy corporations have pushed for their products so hard its become part of the collective psyche.. 'feed the man meat'.. 'get some pork on your fork'.. 'the calcium in milk builds strong bones'. The language needs to change! Apologies for the long comments.. regards Susie

Comment: I think that owners and lovers of animals need to each by example, to love and care for all animals. I think Humans have a responsibility to care for animals like they would a person.

Comment: I've always been of the position that those in animal agriculture should treat the animals as well as possible. At the end of the day, if their life is to be taken for our nourishment, they should at least have a life of being treated with dignity and respect before that time comes.
